1. Every day advice and assistance

Whether it’s to talk about redundancies, workplace health and safety, or if you’re worried you’re not being paid properly, we’re here to help.

Being a union member means you’ll always have someone to call if you find yourself in a tight spot, or if you suddenly find yourself in a really bad situation.

Contact us by phone, email, online or in person.

2. Answers and expertise

With decades of expertise in industrial issues and workplace practices across the industry, we can make that knowledge available to you as a member if you need it.

Wondering if the new system the boss introduced is standard? Are your safety practices adequate? Are they allowed to roster you that way?

Find out with a quick call or email to the CWU.

3. Representation

Sometimes feel powerless, downtrodden, or simply unappreciated at work? Your views are as important as anyone else’s.

You have a right to have your say and be listened to. Not everyone is in a position as an individual to raise issues of concern in a workplace. That’s why unions are so important – there’s strength in numbers.

Your union can raise concerns with your management in a way that an individual may not be able to – with the strength of numbers, expertise and deep, broad-ranging knowledge of the industry to bring to bear in discussions.

4. Better pay and conditions

Research* has found that workplaces where two thirds of the employees are union members get paid 20 per cent more in wages on average.

The reality is that most people simply wouldn’t get significant improvements in their conditions if it weren’t for unions arguing for them.

5. Have someone always on your side

As an employee or sub-contractor you can be at the whim of an employer. You need someone on your side. Your union is there to stand up for you if you need it.

6. Influence

As a member of the union, you get a say in what the union is negotiating for your workplace.

You get to vote for your delegates and officials, you can participate in decision making and you can have your say. In that way, you can have an impact on your workplace, and the work life of yourself and all your colleagues.

Your support will be added to those of other members to fund the negotiations with your management for enterprise agreements and other improvements in employment conditions, and in that way you can have real influence.

7. It’s your right – exercise it

Under Australian law, you have a right to be a union member. That means you must not be discriminated against for being a member of your union. It’s your right – take advantage of it!

8. Union membership fees are tax deductible

Your union membership fees are a legitimate work-related expense, which means you get back more than  30 per cent of your fee. So enjoy all the benefits of union membership at a fraction of the price AND look forward to a fatter tax return.

9. Save more than enough on shopping, banking, insurances and holidays – to more than cover the cost of your membership

Union membership doesn’t just give you access and influence – you get savings too. The CWU offers heaps of discounts on shopping through its Union Shopper card, savings on home loans, insurances and tools of trade (if you’re a contractor), and holidays and other goods through its Ambassador Card.

Take even some of these savings and benefits into account, and your union membership really costs you nothing! In fact it gives you the best return on” investment” you will get anywhere.
